TCI MUSIC INTRODUCES AC-3 SATELLITE RECEIVERS DEVELOPED
BY ANTEX
Lower Price Point and New Features Benefit Both Affiliates
and End-Users of DMX's Music Service
April 29, 1999. (Los Angeles, California) -- DMX, LLC, a
wholly-owned subsidiary of TCI Music, Inc., has unveiled a
new family of Digital Audio Satellite Receivers, it was announced
today by Sam Boskovich, DMX senior vice president of affiliate
sales. Priced at nearly 50% below the previous model, the
new DR500 and DR1000 satellite receivers incorporate improved
features including increased daypart options, improved alignment
and installation features plus enhanced volume leveling and
dynamic range compression. The DR500 and its revolutionary
companion, the DR1000, represent the latest development in
DMX's cutting-edge direct broadcast satellite (DBS) delivery
system. DMX delivers more than 100 digital music programs
to over 4.7 million homes and 62,000 businesses worldwide,
via DBS, cable, compact disc interactive and Primestar(R)
digital television.
"The DR500 and DR1000 represent our newest development
in the DMX DBS delivery service," stated Boskovich. "The
cost-effectiveness of the new receivers together with their
enhanced functionality will give DMX affiliates a competitive
edge in the marketplace. The new units will offer not only
enhanced features for DMX customers but also an improved cost
margin for DMX affiliates."
The DR500 and DR1000 receivers are manufactured by California-based
Antex Electronics. The units were designed by Antex to system
specifications supplied by DMX engineers, who worked closely
with Antex on the design and manufacturing of the units. Antex
president Jim Antrim stated, "We're very proud of the
work we've done with DMX in developing and manufacturing the
customized DR500 and DR1000 units, and we're delighted with
the tailor-made improvements which these receivers provide
for DMX customers, installers and dealers."
The unparalleled, customized musical ambience that DMX offers
increases the customer's identity with a particular brand,
and helps maintain differentiation between competing brands
and businesses. DMX has taken the service a step further by
combining a passion for music with the best in technological
durability, simplicity and efficiency for the ultimate music
experience. A significant advantage for DMX customers, the
new DR500 and DR1000 receivers are half the size of the current
DR200, and therefore require a minimal amount of space for
housing the system. The receivers also include a number of
new and improved features that combine to provide optimum
ease-of-use and system efficiency. The improved volume leveling
and dynamic range of both receivers can be adjusted locally
to suit the customer's ambient acoustic environment. Setting
a new standard in the industry, the DMX DR500 and DR1000 offer
more flexibility in daypart and dynamic range than any other
satellite receiver available.
The new DR500 and DR1000 receivers also include a number
of new features that combine to provide optimum efficiency
of installation. The unique set-up mode is designed specifically
for installation without the use of a remote control, utilizing
the signal level mode to assist in the alignment of the antenna.
Additionally, power is supplied directly through the receiver
rather than from an external source. These installation features
enable quicker and easier alignment, resulting in time-efficient
and cost-effective installations. Finally, the DR500 and DR1000
receivers have been developed at a price-point that considerably
reduces costs to affiliates, allowing them to enjoy greater
margins on the music service. The DMX DR1000 incorporates
all the features of the DR500 plus a number of unique benefits.
This receiver has the ability to supply different styles of
music for up to four different "zones" within a
customer location, without the need for multiple receivers.
For example, with the DR1000 receiver alone, department stores
can provide different styles of music in up to four different
departments, and hotels can program different styles of music
in the bar, the restaurant, the reception area and the banquet
room. The receivers provide for up to 32 dayparts within a
24-hour period, allowing businesses to preset the receiver
to play specific music mixes at a particular time of the day,
targeting the music to a distinct customer base. The DR1000
features an internal amplifier module for cost efficiencies
for the customer. The receiver will also incorporate AdNet
- a built-in memory module that allows downloading, storage
and playback of pre-programmed in-store announcements. Allowing
at least an hour's worth of messaging, AdNet can also be configured
for "music on hold" on a customer's telephone system.
The DMX DR500 is currently available, and is being demonstrated
at the NSCA Show April 29 - May 1, 1999. The DR1000 will be
introduced in the third quarter of 1999.
